Iran has been operating the Russian S-300 PMU-2 "Favorit" SAM system since 2016. This model includes launchers, several 96L6E target detection radars, 30N6E2 target tracking radars, and is a "key defensive asset of the country". This is according to Bulgarian Military.
According to Bulgarian Military, Russia also supplied the S-300 PMU-2 system to Algeria, Vietnam, and Azerbaijan.
This system provides layered air defense through the use of various types of missiles for long, medium, and short ranges. The main question remains whether Iranian S-300 PMU-2s are equipped with 48N6DM surface-to-air missiles. These missiles are compatible with newer S-300 modifications, as well as the S-400.
Thus, the S-300 PMU-2 provides "multi-layered defense" for Iran, the journalists at Bulgarian Military summarized.
