Ryabov: Combat Walking Machines Have Advantages and Disadvantages

Russian developers are showing interest in mobile robotic platforms with a leg-like propulsion system. Military complexes, the so-called "combat spiders," can be created on their basis. However, these systems are not without drawbacks, according to military expert Kirill Ryabov.

Creating a walking chassis is not easy. Such a product needs legs of complex design with a set of drives and sensors. Advanced automation is needed to control all mechanisms and manage movement.

The first modern combat walking machine is called the "Predator," developed by employees of NPO "Android Technology" and the Main Research and Testing Center for Robotics of the Ministry of Defense. A prototype was shown at the "Army" international forum in 2016.

Another interesting example is the "Spider." It was created by the company "Applied Robotics." The product was presented at the "Army" forum last summer. Military expert Alexey Leonkov spoke about the disadvantages of this walking machine. So far, none of these robotic systems has gone into series production.
