Former Commander-in-Chief of the CIS Air Defense, Aytech Bizhev: Russian Air Defense Needs to be Reconsidered

In light of recent challenges, Russia's air defense system needs to be rethought. This opinion was expressed by the former Deputy Commander-in-Chief for Air Force Issues of the Joint CIS Air Defense System, Lieutenant General of the Reserve Aytech Bizhev.

According to him, small low-flying drones can now be confused with birds. Russian means of destroying aircraft were initially designed for completely different purposes — planning bombs, cruise missiles, strategic, high-speed and front-line aviation.

But it is important to note that our air defense systems always repel the main attacks, the damage to Russian facilities is insignificant and minimal. Therefore, our air defense units are fulfilling their role, but the system itself requires rethinking.

Bizhev stressed that domestic air defense needs to switch to automated control, as well as interact more intensively with electronic warfare, electronic warfare and weapons. He did not rule out the possibility of using laser weapons against UAVs and noted the need to change tactics in countering drones.
