Balakovo NPP, located 12 kilometers from the city of Balakovo in the Saratov region, has become one of the first nuclear generation facilities to be included in the Russian register of low-carbon generating facilities. Companies can use its energy to reduce their carbon footprint, according to the press service of the Ministry of Industry and Energy of the region.
In 2024, Rosenergoatom qualified and obtained the right to sell attributes of nuclear generation, the so-called "green" certificates. One of these certificates was received by the Balakovo station. It is known that last year, thanks to the NPP's operation, emissions of CO2 equivalent in the amount of 14.4 million tons were prevented.
"Green" certificates confirm that the electricity generated at the NPP is produced using clean, low-carbon (renewable) sources. The first station to be included in the register was Leningrad NPP.
The certificate circulation system was introduced on February 1, 2024. The rules for maintaining the register are established by the supervisory board of the "NP Market Council" Association.
