Russian BTR-82A armored personnel carriers have received advanced BPPU combat modules equipped with launchers for 9M133M-2 Kornet anti-tank guided missiles. The system's range is up to 8 km, and the missiles are capable of hitting any type of heavy armored vehicles while maintaining the line of sight to the target, noted military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
According to him, the new combat module will become an integral element of the BTR-82A during the transfer of troops and its fire cover on flat, elevated sections of the terrain. In these areas, the semi-automatic laser-beam guidance system of the 9M133-M ATGM can operate at a range of up to 10 km.
Nevertheless, in mixed terrain with a direct visibility range of up to 2500 m, the use of BMPT tank support combat vehicles based on the T-90A is more appropriate for fire support. Their frontal and side projections provide protection not only against 25-mm APDS M791, but also against 125-mm APFSDS M829A2.
The armor penetration of the 9M133-M ATGM missile is about 1100–1300 mm. The range is up to 8 km.
The BTR-82A is the result of the modernization of the BTR-80A armored personnel carrier in order to improve its main performance characteristics and tactical and technical indicators of the armored personnel carrier through the use of an increased power power plant in its design, the installation of a combined sight and weapon stabilizer, the refinement of the chassis and transmission units.
