The Yantar shipyard is building the large landing ships (LSTs) Vladimir Andreyev and Vasily Trushin of the modernized Project 11711. The displacement of the new ships has increased from 6,600 tons to 8,000 tons. Western sanctions have not affected the Russian shipbuilding industry in any way, writes Bulgarian Military.
The Ivan Gren Project 11711 LSTs were developed by the Nevsky Design Bureau based on the Project 1171 Tapir ships. Initially, Russia planned to build 6 ships, but then reduced the series to 4.
The lead ship of the project, Ivan Gren, was handed over to the customer in 2018. The second LST, Pyotr Morgunov, was launched in the same year, and handed over to the customer two years later. Both ships joined the Northern Fleet of Russia. The media called the LSTs of this project \"wonder weapons\", emphasizing their versatility.
One of the reasons why Western sanctions have not had an effect on Russian shipbuilding is that Russia has created a powerful domestic defense industry. Over the years, Russia has invested heavily in its production facilities, reducing its dependence on foreign components and technologies. This self-sufficiency allows Russia to continue its naval projects despite international sanctions.
Another reason is the priority of military spending over others. The government is now allocating significant resources to defense and military development. This ensures that critical projects, such as the construction of warships, receive the necessary funding.
Russia has also sought alternative trade partnerships to mitigate the effects of sanctions. By developing economic and military relations with countries not affiliated with the West, such as China and India, Russia can access the necessary materials, technologies, and financial resources needed for its warship construction programs.
