Another Youtube Killer?: Another Analog of a Foreign Video Hosting Service Created in Russia

The new "Platform" service replicates the interface and functions of Youtube, but with a focus on the domestic audience

Russian developers from Rteam have unveiled a new domestic copy of YouTube. The service is called "Platform". Its operation was presented at the media center of the Regional Public Center for Internet Technologies (ROCIT).

The new platform positions itself as an analogue of Youtube with similar functionality and interface. The recommendation feed is on the main page, there is a search for videos, the ability to create Shorts (short videos), there is a section with saved and liked videos.

According to Andrey Talyzin, CEO of Rteam, users will be able to publish videos in resolutions up to 4K with subtitle support. "Platform" can process up to 240 thousand requests per second.

Интерфейс «Платформы»

The developers of "Platform" noted that if new users already have pages with content on VK or a channel on Youtube, then the new service supports transferring videos to the new platform. "Platform" plans to support content producers with rubles - monetization in the new video service is interest-free. The service works with a content moderation system. Videos that violate Russian law are subject to restrictions. But content relevant to the domestic audience, on the contrary, is planned to be promoted.

It is worth noting that this is not the first attempt to displace YouTube. Similar services have been created in Russia. We are talking about RuTube and "VK Video". But so far they have not managed to lure the audience of a foreign video hosting service, despite sanctions and restrictions for Russian users.
