Russian military personnel on the front lines have begun using a new universal interspecific gliding munition (UMPB) D-30SN. This was reported by Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
According to the source, the ammunition can be launched by Tornado-S multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), which are capable of hitting targets at 120 km and will compete with the American HIMARS MLRS. However, detailed characteristics of the UMPB D-30SN have not yet been published.
A standard HIMARS is capable of firing at a distance of 80 km. Theoretically, it can fire at 300 km, but only with a special ATACMS Block IA tactical missile. And the Tornado-S MLRS fires standard and high-precision missiles at 120 km with the prospect of increasing the range to 200 km.
The Tornado-S has received a GLONASS satellite navigation system and a new computerized fire control system, which has significantly improved firing accuracy.
After the Tornado-S is fully mastered by our artillerymen, HIMARS will lose its aura of exclusivity. It can be argued that the UMPB D-30SN interspecific combat module will significantly enhance the strike power of bomber aviation and ground artillery.
Earlier, Rostec reported that they could create a robotic rocket system multiple launch rocket system based on Smerch.
