"In the works": Belarus may have a second NPP from Rosatom

A working group has already been created to assess the technological, environmental and economic aspects of the project

Belarus may have a second nuclear power plant, this issue is already being worked out.

According to BELTA, the implementation of a comprehensive program of Russian-Belarusian cooperation in the field of nuclear non-energy and non-nuclear projects and issues of ensuring reliable and safe operation of nuclear energy facilities in the territory of the Union State were discussed in Moscow in early June.

Among other things, in the field of nuclear non-energy and non-nuclear projects, Moscow and Minsk are also working on considering the construction of a second nuclear power plant on Belarusian territory.

These issues are being worked out. A lot of serious work is underway, where all aspects are considered: technological, environmental, economic. Together with our Russian colleagues, we are also studying these issues. A corresponding working group has been created in the Republic of Belarus, which involves a large list of government bodies, specialized organizations with the participation of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Belarusian NPP, built by the Russian state corporation Rosatom in the city of Ostrovets, is already successfully operating in the republic. It has two VVER-1200 generation III+ reactors with a total capacity of 2400 MW. The first power unit was commissioned in 2020, the second was connected to work at the end of 2023.

In total, the Belarusian NPP at full capacity, as expected, will generate about 18.5 billion kWh per year. According to the country's Ministry of Energy, this is about 40% of the total Belarusian electricity consumption.

Earlier in March of this year, it became known that Russia and Belarus are working on a project for a mobile nuclear power plant. The Soviet Pamir-630D installation may have a modern descendant.
