The Russian group of companies NPO "Front" has started producing body armor with lightweight boron carbide plates. This made it possible to reduce the weight of the armor by 35%. The new product was presented at the Expocentre in Moscow.
The new body armor meets protection class BR-5. The products protect against bullets from the SVD sniper rifle (caliber 7.62x54 mm) and AKM (7.62x39 mm).
According to Mikhail Kondrus, director of NPO "Front", three types of ceramics are used to create armor panels: silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, and boron carbide.
The latter is the best in terms of its properties. It is the coolest, the strongest, the lightest, and, of course, the most expensive.
The protective armor panel is made of hot-pressed boron carbide. The plate size is 315 by 255 mm, weight is 2.4 kg. The backing of the product is sewn from aramid fabric. Its ballistic properties are 15–20% higher than Kevlar and Tavron.
Materials of Russian production were used in the development of body armor. The products were tested by the military and received high marks.
