Turkey will launch the first power unit at the Akkuyu NPP, which is being built by Rosatom specialists, by the end of 2024. This was announced by the Minister of Energy of the Republic, Alparslan Bayraktar.
According to him, work on the first reactor is almost 95% complete.
I hope that we will start producing electricity based on nuclear energy within a year
Prior to this, the minister said that the operation of the first power unit at the station would begin in 2025. However, Turkey, which needs new sources of cheap energy, hopes to launch the facility ahead of schedule. The authorities call October 29 (Republic Day) as a possible launch date for the power unit.
The Akkuyu NPP is being built in the Mersin province. This is the first Russian-Turkish project of this scale. It includes the construction of four power units with a capacity of 1200 MW each. Rosatom is interested in building two more nuclear power plants in the republic.
