In Russia, 356,000 new passenger cars were sold in the first quarter of 2024. This is twice as much as in the same period last year. The main share of sales came from Chinese brands.
In March 2024, 171,849 new passenger cars were registered with the traffic police. In February, 104,000 new cars were sold.
Renat Tyukteev, Deputy General Director of Avilon, stated that the main share of sales comes from cars from the PRC. The buyer is already used to the Chinese, he added.
Those who, on principle, did not consider buying them are changing their decision. This has a positive effect on sales dynamics
Thus, in the first two months of 2024, LADA led the new car market in terms of sales volume, followed by the Chinese brand Geely, and then Haval, Chery, Changan, Exeed, Omoda, Lixiang, and TANK.
Demand for cars is growing due to the new procedure for calculating the recycling fee, since from April 1, individuals can import cars into Russia directly through customs with the payment of all duties, or through the countries of the Customs Union, but payments must be additionally charged to the recycling fee.
The tightening of rules for importing cars from the EAEU has forced Russians to more actively buy cars, which will now significantly rise in price by 20–28%
Note that in the first quarter of last year, 171.3 thousand passenger cars were purchased, in 2022 - 227.3 thousand, and in 2021 - 349.8 thousand.
