Import substitution is difficult: more than half of the batches of Russian Baikal chips turned out to be defective

The reasons for the defects are problems with equipment and a shortage of qualified specialists

The Russian company Baikal Electronics intends to expand the experiment on localizing the production of Baikal chips in Zelenograd. One of the stages is related to the installation of semiconductor crystals in the package (packaging).

In November 2021, Baikal Electronics began testing packaging at the GS Group site in the Kaliningrad Region. Now, specialists from Milandr and Micron in Zelenograd will be involved in this, according to an informed source in the electronics market.

The source claims that import substitution is difficult.

The reason for the defect is insufficient competence of specialists, as well as poorly configured equipment. Until February 2022, Baikal Electronics ordered the production of chips, including packaging, at the TSMC factory in Taiwan. Due to sanctions, the Asian company refused to partner with the Russian developer.
