A program to restore military airfields has been launched in Russia. Both existing runways and mothballed or abandoned sites will be repaired. First of all, the Russian Ministry of Defense aims to put in order the basing points of special equipment in the western direction in the Moscow and Leningrad military districts, as well as in the Northern Fleet, the military department said.
According to a recent decree by President Vladimir Putin, two military districts have been formed - Moscow and Leningrad. Basing points are needed in these areas. Something will be repaired, somewhere new will have to be built.
It is necessary to restore not only runways, but also all the necessary infrastructure, including premises for personnel. According to Gorbenko, some inactive airfields were maintained in good condition, while others were completely abandoned.
Test pilot, Hero of Russia Igor Malikov noted in a comment to Izvestia that airfields need to be kept in working order.
You never know what might happen. Therefore, we need to keep our powder dry.
According to him, these are important things from a security point of view, for example, if pilots have an emergency situation, they will be able to land at the restored airfield.
The Russian military began to strengthen the western and north-western borders as soon as Sweden and Finland asked to join NATO. Thus, fighter and bomber regiments, units of radio engineering troops and air defense will be deployed in the western direction. A new combined arms army will be formed in the Northern Fleet.
Naval aviation will be stationed at the Levashovo airfield, recently opened after reconstruction in the Leningrad region. This will strengthen the Baltic direction.
It should be recalled that several years ago the military began to restore the northern airfields on the mainland and Arctic islands. The Rogachevo airfield will be put in order on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The plan for its repair was approved in 2023. It is designed for five years.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that RUSAL plans to build the first aluminum runway in the country. It will be designed for use by small aircraft in the Far East.
