A prototype of a traffic light equipped with a biometric face recognition camera has been tested on the Berezhkovskaya embankment in Moscow. The device can record traffic violations by pedestrians, according to the head of the Moscow State Traffic Inspectorate, Alexander Bykov.
The camera displays the track along which the pedestrian moves and indicates the traffic light signal. If there is a violation, an image of the pedestrian is displayed on the screen.
However, according to Bykov, the innovative idea will require significant resources for implementation. Firstly, the authorities need to have biometric data of all Russians. In this case, submitting biometrics may become mandatory.
Secondly, amendments will have to be made to regulatory legal acts and national standards relating to traffic rules, he concluded.
Earlier, the Moscow authorities reported that in public transport about 150 thousand trips are paid daily using biometrics.
