In Russia, the newest 120mm self-propelled artillery gun 2S40 'Phlox' has been sent for testing. It's a direct successor to the unique self-propelled gun 'Nona' and the further development of the 'Vienna' and 'Hosta' systems.
'Phlox' is the first Russian self-propelled gun mounted on the chassis of a high-mobility armored wheeled truck (previously, self-propelled guns were based on a crawler platform). The wheeled chassis Ural-4320 significantly increases the mobility of the self-propelled gun, which allows for quickly changing fire positions.
The features of 'Phlox' include a combined semi-automatic rifled gun, which allows for firing with all types of mortar mines and shells. The gun can be used as a howitzer and mortar, as well as direct fire, like a gun. The weapon's position is automatically maintained: after each shot, the guidance is automatically restored. The gun has a rate of fire of 10 shots per minute, a firing range of up to 12 km, and an ammunition payload of 80 rounds.
Another feature of the 'Phlox' is the presence of a system for detecting laser irradiation and deploying optical interference, protecting it from guided projectiles and missiles. There is also a new type of smoke protection. For self-defense, 'Phlox' is equipped with a roof-mounted remote control module with a 12.7 mm 'Cord' machine gun.
The armored Ural-4320 (which is protected from armor-piercing incendiary bullets of 7.62 mm caliber) has a five-seat cabin, which houses the driver and artillery crew - the gun commander and loaders.
