The new generation Russian tank may be built not on the T-14 "Armata" platform, but on the basis of a deeply modernized T-90M "Proryv" tank. The General Director of Uralvagonzavod, Alexander Potapov, spoke about the new approach to the development of armored vehicles.
According to him, real combat experience has significantly changed the requirements for modern tanks. Now, robotization, digital control systems, and the integration of artificial intelligence elements are coming to the forefront.
Why the focus is on the T-90M
The T-90M "Proryv" is currently considered the most refined and mass-produced modern Russian tank. The vehicle is already in service with the troops, is well known to the industry, and has undergone combat deployment in real conflict conditions.
In addition, the T-90 maintenance infrastructure has long been established, and the production cost is significantly lower than that of the T-14 "Armata". That is why many technologies originally developed for the "Armata" can now be adapted for the T-90M platform.
In fact, this is a more pragmatic scenario for the development of armored vehicles – without a sharp transition to a completely new platform.
What will change in the tank of the future
The main feature of the new generation MBT will be deep digitalization. The tank should become part of a single combat network with constant information exchange between drones, reconnaissance, and other combat vehicles.
Artificial intelligence elements will be able to help the crew analyze threats, recognize targets, and accelerate decision-making. Great attention is also paid to the automation of aiming and fire control systems.
A separate direction will be protection against FPV drones and top attacks – these threats have become one of the main problems of modern armored vehicles.
What will happen to the "Armata"
Against the backdrop of new statements, the question of the future of the T-14 "Armata" arises more and more often. Just a few years ago, this tank was called the new generation platform, but now the focus is gradually shifting towards cheaper and mass-produced solutions.
At the same time, the "Armata" itself does not disappear. Some of its technologies, including digital systems, protection means, and automation elements, can be used in modernized versions of the T-90M.
