On March 21, 1996, a new domestic airliner took to the skies over Kazan. It was on this day that the first flight of the prototype took place, which in Tupolev Design Bureau documents was referred to as Tu-204-200. Later, this modification received its own designation, Tu-214. The aircraft took off from the runway of the Gorbunov Kazan Aviation Plant. This historic flight was commanded by test pilot Alexander Kosyrev. His crew managed to get the heavy aircraft into the air and confirm the calculated stability characteristics.
Testing of the New Airliner
The designers set the task of creating a medium-range aircraft capable of replacing the outdated Tu-154. The engineers equipped the wing with a new profile and installed PS-90A turbofan engines developed by a Perm enterprise. This solution made it possible to reduce fuel consumption and reduce noise compared to its predecessors. During the first flight, the control system proved to be reliable. Alexander Kosyrev later noted that the aircraft obeyed the pilots clearly, although the load on the crew remained high due to the responsibility of the moment. The flight proceeded normally without any comments on the operation of the onboard systems.
After a successful start, lengthy certification tests began. The plant in Kazan continued to refine components and assemblies. The name Tu-214 became attached to the aircraft to emphasize its difference from the basic version of the Tu-204, which was assembled in Ulyanovsk. The Kazan version received a reinforced landing gear and an increased take-off weight. This allowed the aircraft to be used on longer routes and operated at airfields with less prepared surfaces.
The Role of Alexander Kosyrev
Without the participation of experienced pilots, the launch of new equipment is impossible. Alexander Kosyrev was among the leading test pilots of the Kazan plant. His experience made it possible to identify the nuances of the machine's behavior in different modes. The test reports indicated that the crew worked well together. The pilots checked the operation of the autopilot and navigation systems in real conditions. Kosyrev reported to the management that the aircraft was ready for further testing program. His name remained in the history of domestic aircraft construction as the person who first raised this machine into the sky.
The Fate of the Project in Russia
Over the past three decades, the aircraft's path has not been easy. Serial production proceeded in waves depending on the demand of airlines. The main customer was the Special Flight Detachment "Russia". Their aircraft transport the first persons of the state and perform special missions. The aircraft were also used for cargo transportation in the interests of postal and logistics companies. The design has shown its survivability and maintainability in difficult climatic conditions.
Now interest in the project has revived as part of the import substitution program. Industry enterprises are considering the possibility of resuming production using domestic components. The aircraft remains in service and continues to operate flights. The anniversary of the first flight reminds us of the potential of the Russian engineering school. The machine has proven that it is capable of solving medium and long-range tasks without foreign participation in key systems.
