Military Expert Weichert: Failure with Luna-25 Hits Russia's Image

In the summer of 2023, Roscosmos sent the Luna-25 interplanetary automatic station to Earth's satellite. It was launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome. However, on August 20, the station went into an unplanned orbit, collided with the Moon, and crashed.

The launch of the Luna-25 interplanetary automatic station was a bold attempt by Russia to regain its lost leadership in space.

The Russians wanted to be the first to reach the South Pole of the Moon, given that any settlement would be located there. However, this mission failed.

After the failure, Russia announced its desire to send a new station to the Moon. Later, Roscosmos decided to focus its resources on other projects and began cooperation with China.

The failure with Luna-25 "hit Russia's image". This was especially noticeable after the Indian Space Research Organisation managed to make a soft landing of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the surface of the Moon.

The Luna-25 incident is a story of unrealized ambitions. Russia's experience suggests that stability is important in space exploration. China seems ready to accept the Russian Federation as a partner in the exploration of the Moon.

From 1957 to 1988, the main rivals in the space race were the USA and the USSR. On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made the first flight into space. Thanks to this event, the USSR secured the status of a space power.
