The Japanese Ministry of Defense has published a report on modern threats from other countries. In particular, the agency announced the deployment of Russian submarines of the "Borei", "Yasen-M", and "Kilo" ("Varshavyanka") projects in the Far East. This is reported by Defense News.
The submarine group included the fifth nuclear submarine of the "Borei" project ("Knyaz Oleg"), the second nuclear submarine with cruise missiles of the "Yasen-M" project ("Kazan"), and the improved diesel-electric submarine of the "Kilo" project, the fourth in the Russian Pacific Fleet ("Ufa").
The Japanese agency also expressed concern about the strengthening of military-technical ties between Russia and China and North Korea. A separate paragraph is devoted to Pyongyang's development of ballistic, hypersonic, and nuclear weapons.
In recent years, North Korea's nuclear missile tests and its attempts to launch reconnaissance satellites have caused concern among experts in Tokyo.
Submarines of the "Borei" project (955 and 955A) carry Bulava solid-propellant ballistic missiles. Their range is 9300 km. Submarines of Project 885M "Yasen-M" are armed with Kalibr cruise missiles (up to 2600 km), Onyx (from 300 to 800 km), and Zircon hypersonic missiles (over 1000 km). Submarines of Project 636.3 "Varshavyanka" are also equipped with "Kalibrs".
