19fortyfive: 885M Yasen-M Submarines Capable of Striking European Cities with Tsirkon and Kalibr NK Missiles

Russia accelerates the production cycle of 885M Yasen-M submarines

Russian Yasen-M class submarines (Project 885M) can perform the same tasks as American Virginia-class submarines. However, they are armed with 3M22 Tsirkon hypersonic anti-ship missiles and "pose a threat to NATO countries". This was written by military expert Ruben Johnson in an article for 19fortyfive.

The "Arkhangelsk" submarine of project 855M "Yasen-M"

The Royal United Services Institute for Defence Studies (London) reported that Russia has accelerated the production cycle of Project 855M Yasen-M submarines. In particular, the Kazan submarine was built much faster than the lead boat of the Severodvinsk project. In addition, the shipbuilders managed to reduce the cost of its construction.

The missiles that Yasen-M class submarines can launch are a cause for concern. The hypersonic 3M22 Tsirkon, which develops a speed of 6-8 Mach, deprives the enemy of the opportunity to react to the attack.

Johnson recalled that at the end of December 2024, the Russian Navy received the fourth submarine of this class — the Arkhangelsk. Half of the Yasen-M project vessels may join the Northern Fleet.

In addition to the Tsirkon, the Yasen-M also carries the 3M-54 Kalibr NK cruise missile with a range of 1,000 miles and the P-800 Onyx anti-ship missile. Boats of this class can hit 75% of European capitals, even if they launch missiles from the North Sea.
