Machine waited 1.5 months for a milling cutter: Irkutsk Aviation Plant broke the supply chain

The enterprise restructured the process to ensure tools are not delayed

At the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, a LEAN event dedicated to the uninterrupted supply of cutting tools to CNC machines was presented. The problem turned out to be typical — a large selection of similar milling cutters, a changing production plan, and lengthy registration procedures.

Previously, tool registration took a month and a half, which hindered timely delivery. Now, the period has been reduced to one day.

Engineers unified milling cutters and purchased tools, creating a list of interchangeability — if one milling cutter is unavailable, another can be used without loss of quality.

At IAZ, a methodology for calculating the tool 'reorder point' was developed and implemented in the automatic control system.

Expected results — reduction in delivery times, creation of necessary reserves, reduction of low-turnover stock, and elimination of equipment downtime due to lack of tools.

Currently, IAZ builds one MC-21 in approximately 11–12 months. The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov, did not rule out that the plant would produce more than 70 aircraft per year, considering plans for export.
