Rosfinmonitoring has revealed the most common methods of legalizing illegally obtained money. According to the agency, funds, including those obtained through tax evasion, are most often used to purchase real estate, expensive cars, jewelry, and investments in existing businesses. Such acquisitions allow illegal proceeds to be converted into property and other assets.
Real estate remains one of the most popular areas, with properties being acquired both in Russia and abroad. Other common options include premium segment cars and expensive jewelry. In addition, illegally obtained funds can be invested in existing companies.
To identify such schemes, Rosfinmonitoring collects and analyzes information on money transfers, property transactions, and other financial operations. Specialists look for signs of suspicious activity and exchange information with the Bank of Russia and other government agencies.
If the collected materials provide sufficient grounds to suspect violations, financial intelligence transfers them to law enforcement or tax authorities for further investigation. Rosfinmonitoring itself does not determine the guilt of the participants in the operations — the legal assessment of their actions is given by authorized bodies and the court.
The acquisition of real estate, an expensive car, or a share in a business does not in itself indicate a violation of the law. The origin of the funds, the nature of the operations, and other circumstances established during the investigation are important.
