220-mm "Uragan" moved to tracks: unusual BMP-2D shown in Afghanistan

Instead of the standard turret, 16 guides were placed on the Soviet armored vehicle, and retractable supports were added for firing

The Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan showed a vehicle on which the launcher of the Soviet Uragan multiple launch rocket system was mounted on the tracked chassis of a BMP-2D. A package of guides for 220-mm rockets was placed instead of the standard turret.

The modification differs significantly from the standard Uragan layout. The 9P140 combat vehicle of this complex uses a ZIL-135LM four-axle wheeled chassis, while the Afghan version received a tracked platform of a Soviet BMP. To ensure stability during launch, two retractable supports were mounted in the rear of the hull.

The BMP-2D was created in the USSR specifically taking into account the experience of the war in Afghanistan. It differed from the regular BMP-2 by additional hull and bottom armor, and its combat weight reached approximately 14.5 tons. At the same time, the vehicle retained a 300-horsepower diesel engine.

The Uragan itself uses 220-mm rockets and normally carries 16 guides. Several types of ammunition have been created for it, and the firing range of standard high-explosive shells reaches approximately 35 km.
