DNA Memory and Computations on Live Neurons: Russia is Creating Biocomputers

Head of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov believes that decades will pass before their mass appearance

Russia is working on several directions of biocomputers simultaneously. This was stated by the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Gennady Krasnikov. Among the developments, he named memory based on DNA molecules and various proteins, as well as computational systems built on live neurons.

Such technologies are considered a possible alternative or addition to conventional electronics. However, researchers still need to understand what real advantages biocomputers can offer compared to existing computing systems.

According to Krasnikov, a mass transition to such devices is not to be expected in the near future. He believes that even after several decades, transistors will remain the basis of computing technology.

Modern electronics is still predominantly built on semiconductors and silicon. At the same time, scientists are exploring more promising materials, including two-dimensional ones, which can change the design of transistors, but the silicon wafer itself, according to the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will retain its key role for a long time.

Biocomputers remain more of an experimental direction than an imminent replacement for conventional processors: developments are already underway, but their advantages and practical scenarios still need to be proven.
