5G networks will not be able to cover 80% of Russia's population until 2030, according to Eldar Murtazin, leading analyst at Mobile Research Group. He told RIA Novosti about this. Currently, the standard has been launched in 16 cities across the country and is available to 10 million subscribers.
Last week, the first fifth-generation networks were launched in Russia. The launch in another 50 cities is being worked out by the end of the year. To use 5G, you need a new smartphone with standard support and to be within the coverage area. For iPhone owners, access depends on Apple's decision – the Ministry of Digital Development is discussing the connection with the company.
The expert emphasized that any standard develops gradually. Total access will be in 2030–2031, when 80% of the population will potentially be able to use 5G. For now, coverage is limited to specific locations, and mass deployment is hindered by the lack of serial Russian base stations.
