"You can, but why?" is now the official trademark of AvtoVAZ. The company has registered this trademark, and not only for cars. It covers a wide range of goods and services - from clothing and toys to drinks, advertising, communications, and education. Information about this appeared in the electronic database of Rospatent.
The trademark is registered for a large number of categories. The list includes vehicles, various devices, printed materials and office supplies, leather goods, clothing, footwear, and headwear.
In addition, the trademark extends to games, toys, and video game devices, beverages, including beer, as well as advertising, telecommunication services, and education.
The phrase itself appeared in the public domain earlier. "You can, but why?" was uttered by Oleg Grunenkov, AvtoVAZ's product and program director, during an interview with blogger Amiran Sardarov.
This is how the top manager answered the question of whether AvtoVAZ could produce BMW-class cars. The video was released on November 28, 2025, and the phrase itself became popular within a few days.
However, Grunenkov then explained that installing an engine with 250–300 horsepower would require an increased load on the car's transmission and braking system. According to him, creating such a car would require changing the entire production chain. Simply putting a powerful engine on an existing car, as he put it, is not enough - you cannot make "big engines on a trolley."
