Russian kamikaze drones "Molniya" have also switched to using mesh modems for communication with the crew. The nuances of the modernization were reported by "Voennaya Khronika" analysts, citing foreign sources.
Reportedly, the "Molniya" drones received a reduced-size modem with two channels, each with 5 W of power, and an operating range of 1300–1500 MHz.
"Molniya" ceases to be a drone tied to a direct "operator – drone" channel. It can join a common mesh network and receive or transmit data through other UAVs that act as repeaters. This allows for increasing the effective communication range and maintaining the channel.
Experts reminded that mesh networks on drones work as a transmission point and a repeater. For example, such modems are used on "Geran" drones after abandoning Starlink terminals.
At the same time, the built-in autopilot mode on "Molniya" drones allows them to continue flying and perform their mission even when attempts are made to jam communication. A solution has also been found for kinetic interceptors; the drones begin to actively maneuver.
