The Geoscan 201 fixed-wing drone and the Geoscan Gemini quadcopter, developed by specialists from the Geoscan Group, used photogrammetry technologies to digitize the Moneron Island natural park, Cape Velikan, and Cape Ptichy in Sakhalin. The obtained data can be used for planning tourist routes. This was reported by the Group's press service.
Due to the complex terrain of the natural park and weather conditions, the work took several days. Operators surveyed an area of more than 20 km² with drones.
A detailed 3D model of the island and orthophotomaps were uploaded to the state information system "Digital Twin of the Urban Planning Industry of Sakhalin Oblast". The data is also needed for monitoring "Moneron Island".
UAS are used for controlling and developing infrastructure in territories of any type.
The use of drones, compared to manned aviation, is cheaper and safer, Demko noted. The quality of terrain surveying is significantly higher due to drones flying at low altitudes. This is important for specially protected natural areas where it is necessary to determine the condition of small objects or areas of terrain. In this case, data analysis is carried out using AI technologies, the top manager explained.
The Agency for Forestry and Hunting of Sakhalin Oblast stated that drones open up new opportunities for environmental agencies. Orthophotomaps will simplify the modeling of anthropogenic processes and improve the quality of natural resource monitoring, the agency concluded.
