Fuel of lower environmental classes Euro-2, Euro-3, and Euro-4 to appear at gas stations from September

The Russian government has allowed the sale of gasoline and diesel fuel of environmental classes K2, K3, K4, and K5, known as Euro-2, Euro-3, Euro-4, and Euro-5, at Russian gas stations starting September 1, 2026, Interfax reports, citing the Ministry of Energy. The decision will be valid until June 30, 2027.

Previously, refineries could supply such fuel under internal contracts, but its retail sale was restricted. Now, gas stations are obliged to inform customers about the environmental class of each brand so that they can choose independently. The measure is temporary: it is a response to a seasonal surge in consumption and unscheduled refinery repairs, which led to restrictions on fuel sales volumes in several regions.

The Ministry of Energy emphasized that the decree is a tool for operational response to ensure supply stability and reduce shortages of certain types of fuel. Long-term environmental requirements for refined products remain. However, Euro-2 and Euro-3 fuels contain more sulfur and harmful impurities, which is dangerous for modern engines and the environment.
