Scientists from the V.E. Zuev Institute of Atmospheric Optics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences received a patent for a method of wireless optical communication protected from interception. The development is intended for data transmission systems, laser technology and fiber optics, as well as for quantum communications.
The method is based on a special grating that creates a laser beam from several vortex modes. These modes encode information, then the beam passes through the atmosphere, is received and divided into separate components, which are registered.
The main advantage is that the use of vortex modes allows increasing the volume of transmitted information and makes the communication channel resistant to interception. As noted in the patent description, the set of registered modes at each moment in time corresponds to the transmitted signal.
The technology can be used for wireless data transmission where radio communication is limited, as well as for creating secure quantum communication lines. This is one of the most promising areas in modern optics and photonics, which can be applied in next-generation communication systems.
