Russia is creating microwave air defense to replace Pantsir systems

Analyst Mikhailov: "Shooting sparrows with a missile is too expensive"

Russia needs to build a new air defense system using microwave and laser systems. They are already under active development, said military expert and analyst Evgeny Mikhailov.

According to him, it is impossible to place Pantsir anti-aircraft missile systems at every single facility. Mikhailov questioned the cost of launching a missile at a small drone, comparing such countermeasures to "shooting sparrows with a cannon."

There should be a comprehensive security system, built primarily on the same mobile fire groups. Such systems are currently being developed, by the way: laser systems, microwave systems.

However, an air defense specialist with the call sign Palych doubted that mobile groups could still be effective given the development of attack drones. At the same time, he also believes that the focus should be on innovative means of destruction.

MOGs in their current form are a thing of the past. Groups need to be equipped with weapons, including laser-sighted weapons for more accurate shooting and laser rifles for hitting flying targets. Such weapons have already been developed by Russian scientists and supplied to the troops.

He also agrees that in the future, the basis of protection against UAVs should be mass means, including interceptor drones, automatic turrets, electronic warfare systems, networks, and additional detection posts.

Laser air defense in Russia is being created as part of the "Posokh" project. To increase efficiency, the system was integrated with radar, which allows for more accurate detection and tracking of "birds." According to the latest information, during tests, it was possible to achieve a range of 1.5 km.
