El Dabaa NPP Grows to 34 Meters: Fourth Tier of Protection Concreted on First Unit

Around 80 specialists participated in the concreting, with work lasting 30 hours

Concreting of the fourth tier of the inner containment shell of the reactor building has been completed on the first power unit of the El Dabaa NPP in Egypt. The work was carried out by the project team, with about 80 specialists participating over 30 hours.

After the concreting was completed, the height of the building increased from +24.4 to +34 meters. The inner containment shell is a massive reinforced concrete structure that houses the reactor and primary circuit equipment. It is erected sequentially, tier by tier, forming a sealed circuit for the reactor building.

The next stage will be the installation of the fifth tier. Alexey Zhukov, First Vice President for Construction at Atomstroyexport, announced that these works are planned to begin in mid-August.

A polar crane will subsequently be installed on the fifth tier, which is used to move heavy equipment inside the reactor building.

The El Dabaa NPP is being built according to a Russian design with four VVER-1200 power units. Their total electrical capacity will be 4.8 GW. The plant will be Egypt's first nuclear power plant.
