Designer Vladimir Mikhailov from Kostroma proposed an unusual power plant in which exhaust gases do not simply leave the engine, but are re-engaged in the mechanism's operation. The development documents were registered with Rospatent.
The inventor combined three units into one system: a conventional internal combustion engine, a two-stroke compressor, and a pneumatic engine. Moreover, all of them are connected by a single crankshaft.
The scheme works as a closed loop. The turbocharger pumps air into the compressor, which supplies it to the ICE cylinders, and after the fuel mixture combustion, the exhaust is directed not immediately outside, but to the pneumatic engine. It additionally acts on the common crankshaft and drives the turbocharger.
Exhaust energy is reused instead of being lost immediately after the working cycle. The design also includes a receiver with a valve for metered supply of compressed air.
Mikhailov focused on the development of combined engines. His previous invention was a scheme in which an ICE and a pneumatic engine work as a single system with a closed energy transfer scheme through a turbocharger.
