The legendary An-2 is awaiting a major upgrade: the aircraft will receive a new control system, a digital "glass cockpit", additional fuel tanks, and will be able to carry up to 12 passengers. Decisions on modernization were discussed by Rosaviatsia, SibNIA named after S. A. Chaplygin, Aviapassport Russia, NIC "Institute named after N. E. Zhukovsky" and the company "Rusaviaprom".
After the re-issuance of the type certificate, changes have already been made to the operational documentation, allowing some equipment to be serviced according to its technical condition. At the same time, specialists are considering various options for replacing the aircraft's power plant.
The next stage of modernization includes the installation of a digital avionics complex, an updated control system, and additional fuel tanks, which should expand the aircraft's operational capabilities.
Rosaviatsia noted that it is planned to involve An-2 operators and maintenance organizations in the discussion of the project. According to the agency, close cooperation between the developer and future users will allow for faster agreement on technical solutions and requirements for the updated aircraft.
Obtaining a type certificate opened up the possibility of officially supporting the An-2 fleet, producing spare parts, performing repairs, and continuing the modernization of the aircraft. In September 2026, the certification of the modernized An-2MS-X (TVS-2MS) version is expected to begin.
The day before, Roman Gusarov, editor-in-chief of Avia.ru, told "Pervyy Tekhnicheskiy" that Russia gained the opportunity to officially develop the An-2 program decades later after losing full control over the aircraft's documentation and production base.
