Natalya Kaspersky, President of InfoWatch, stated that the mass use of biometrics in Russia is impractical. According to her, this is due to high costs, technical limitations, and the growing threat of deepfakes.
Kaspersky explained that biometric identification requires the creation of a digital facial model from many points. For comparison, she cited Apple ID, which uses up to 30 thousand points. Scaling such a system to the entire country, according to her estimates, would require huge costs for creating and maintaining data storage facilities.
In addition, the quality of a biometric imprint depends on the shooting conditions and the camera used – not all users can provide the necessary level. A separate problem, according to Kaspersky, is deepfakes: modern technologies already allow creating images that the eye cannot distinguish from real ones.
Under these conditions, I am not sure that it is necessary to use biometrics massively. Perhaps it can be used in a limited way, in some processes, as an additional means of identifying a person.
Russia already has a Unified Biometric System, which allows identification for logging into "Gosuslugi", issuing electronic signatures and loans in some banks. According to a VTB survey, about 45% of Russians are ready to use biometrics instead of a passport to receive services.
