Another An-24 incident: aircraft forced to return to Tyumen after engine malfunction

This is the third case of such aircraft being forced to abort flights in 2026 due to technical problems

A passenger aircraft An-24 of "A247" airline, performing a flight from Tyumen to Beloyarsky, was forced to return to the departure airport after a malfunction was detected in one of its power units. The crew decided to abort the flight, and the aircraft landed safely.

The incident occurred on July 15 at about 09:00 local time. After detecting incorrect operation of the power unit, the aircraft commander assessed the situation and decided to return to the departure airfield.

The Tyumen Transport Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Specialists will assess compliance with flight safety requirements, the organization of aircraft maintenance, the quality of pre-flight preparation, and the crew's actions in an emergency situation.

The An-24 is equipped with two AI-24 turboprop engines, developed by the Zaporizhzhia Machine-Building Design Bureau "Progress" named after Academician A. G. Ivchenko. Serial versions of the aircraft used AI-24 family engines, including the AI-24T modification. Each engine develops about 2550 horsepower and drives a four-bladed variable-pitch propeller AV-72 or AV-72T.

This is not the first incident involving An-24 aircraft in 2026. On April 29, a passenger An-24RV of "Khabarovsk Airlines" returned to Khabarovsk airport after a fire alarm in the auxiliary power unit. And in February, a turboprop An-24, performing a sanitary flight Irkutsk — Bodaybo, experienced an engine failure. The crew decided to divert to an alternate airfield, after which the aircraft landed safely with no injuries.
