Yekaterinburg Metro to decommission 11 worn-out trains and purchase new ones by 2035

Yekaterinburg is preparing for a large-scale replacement of its metro fleet. According to the transport development program for 2027–2031 published by the city administration, 11 train sets are reaching the end of their operational life without the possibility of modernization. By 2035, it is planned to purchase 11 new four-car train sets – two per year starting from 2028.

Currently, 15 train sets – a total of 70 carriages – operate on the single line. The core of the fleet consists of 54 carriages of models 81-717.5 and 81-714.5, manufactured by the Leningrad Carriage Building Plant back in 1989. In 2018–2020, they underwent modernization at the facilities of JSC "METROVAGONMASH SPb", JSC "KrEVRZ", and OAO "OEVRZ". Later, the fleet was supplemented by four carriages of model 81-717.5M/714.5M built by the Oktyabrsky Electric Car Repair Plant in 2011, and another four carriages of model 81-717.6/714.6, assembled in 2019 at JSC "METROVAGONMASH" in Mytishchi. It is the oldest carriages from 1989, despite major repairs, that have exhausted their resources and require replacement.

Maintenance and repair of rolling stock are carried out at the city's only electric depot, "Kalinovskoye". A trip along the entire line from "Prospekt Kosmonavtov" to "Botanicheskaya" takes 19 minutes with stops, and the estimated capacity of a four-car train is 1276 people. Simultaneously, authorities note the critical wear and tear of ground transport: out of 438 trams, about 400 require replacement, and the average age of Czech "Tatras" exceeds 36 years, compared to a standard of 18. The trolleybus and bus fleets also need updating, for which an application for preferential leasing through GTLC has already been submitted.
