OSAGO is bursting at the seams: owners of Chinese cars are massively refusing policies in Russia

The gap between the market and payments reaches 400-450% for individual parts

Owners of Chinese cars in Russia have begun to massively refuse to issue OSAGO policies, sources of Shot in the insurance market claim. The reason is the significant discrepancy between the real cost of auto parts and the estimates used to calculate insurance payments.

According to industry participants, in a number of regions, the proportion of drivers without a valid policy already exceeds half of the car fleet. The trend is most noticeable among owners of popular Chinese models, who consider insurance coverage economically inefficient: after an accident, compensation often does not cover the real cost of repairs.

The key factor is the methodology of the Russian Union of Auto Insurers, which forms a directory of average market prices for spare parts. According to the National Automobile Union, the discrepancy between the catalog and the actual market reaches multiple values. A front bumper for a Haval Jolion costs about 30.9 thousand rubles, although the directories indicate a price of about 5.6 thousand. For an Omoda C5, a front bumper can be bought for 29.5 thousand, although insurance companies recommend it for 5.9 thousand. And a bumper for a Tenet T4 will cost 71.8 thousand on the market, while according to the catalog it costs 32.9 thousand.

Representatives of industry associations note that the revision of directories is slower than market dynamics. According to them, in 2024, the adjustment of parts costs amounted to only about half a percent, and in 2025 – less than two percent. Against this background, insurance payments are increasingly insufficient for full-fledged repairs, and car owners have to compensate for the difference from their own funds even in cases where they are not at fault in an accident.
