A photo of an unusual multi-barreled firing installation, based on three "Maxim" system heavy machine guns, has spread online. The structure is mounted on a single rotating base and equipped with vertical and horizontal aiming mechanisms, as well as boxes for machine gun belts.
Outwardly, the installation resembles multi-barreled anti-aircraft systems of past eras, adapted for modern tasks of combating low-flying targets.
The use of several machine guns at once significantly increases the density of fire without the use of specialized automatic cannons. However, such solutions are characterized by large mass, require significant ammunition consumption, and are difficult to transport.
The "Maxim" system machine gun was developed by the British inventor of American origin Hiram Stevens Maxim in 1883 and became one of the first mass-produced automatic weapons. In the Russian and Soviet armies, the 1910/30 model variant became widespread. The weapon's automation works due to the recoil of the barrel with a short stroke, and cooling is carried out by water in the barrel casing.
