Il-96 Returned to Service Damaged After Landing

The aircraft was restored after more than 10 years of conservation

The Il-96-400T cargo aircraft of Sky Gates Airlines was damaged after landing at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport. The long-haul aircraft was returned to service only at the beginning of 2025 after more than 10 years of work to restore its airworthiness.

During the rollout after landing, the aircraft veered left and exited the runway by approximately 33 meters.

As a result, elements of the airfield's light signaling equipment were damaged. In addition, the aircraft sustained damage to its landing gear, but there was no depressurization.

There were seven crew members, two escorts, and 81 tons of cargo on board. No one was injured.

Aviation expert Oleg Panteleev explained that the new Il-96-400M is initially uninteresting to airlines that have already chosen Boeing and Airbus in this transportation segment. In fact, this situation makes the liner illiquid in the domestic market.
