The construction of the first nuclear power plant (NPP) in the Republic of Bangladesh — "Rooppur" — is at a key stage. Russian specialists and employees of local companies participated in the project. This was stated by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev. His words are quoted by the Bangladeshi publication Daily Sun.
163 fuel assemblies have already been loaded into the reactor core. Next, the reactor will be brought to a minimally controlled power level and its power will be gradually increased.
Soon, the generated electricity will begin to flow into Bangladesh's power grid, Likhachev added.
During the construction of the Rooppur NPP, Rosatom applied modern engineering solutions and installed a multi-level protection system. Nuclear scientists also took into account the natural and climatic factors of the region to ensure the safety of the facility, he noted.
71 local companies were involved in the project. Purchases from local suppliers reached 90%, the Director General of the state corporation emphasized.
During the active phase of construction, more than 30,000 people worked on the site. Currently, over 21,000 specialists work at the Rooppur NPP, almost 80% of whom are Bengalis.
Likhachev added that the launch of the plant will improve the lives of almost a fifth of Bangladesh's population. The facility will provide stable electricity to about 37 million people, he concluded.
