Krasnoyarsk HPP Dramatically Increases Efficiency: Upgraded Hydropower Unit No. 3 Launched Ahead of Schedule

A giant 300-ton transformer increased the unit's power and the station's reliability

At the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Power Plant, modernized hydropower unit No. 3 has been put into operation ahead of schedule, which, after extensive reconstruction, began operating with increased efficiency and reliability. The upgrade was carried out by En+ company as part of the large-scale technical re-equipment program "New Energy".

The hydropower unit, which had been in operation for over half a century, underwent a comprehensive modernization that lasted about six months. During the work, key components of the equipment were completely replaced. Special attention was paid to a new generation transformer, designed to increase electricity generation and ensure more stable operation of the station. Its mass reaches about 300 tons, and its length is about 10 meters, which made its installation one of the most complex operations of the project.

Also, a new runner with a redesigned blade geometry, developed by Russian engineers, was installed at the station. The 240-ton structure reduced vibrations and noise levels, increased cavitation resistance, and improved the hydropower unit's efficiency. Additionally, the equipment became more effective at lower water levels, which is especially important during low-water periods.

Thanks to the modernization, the overall power and reliability of the hydropower unit increased, as did the volume of renewable electricity generation. The company notes that the updated equipment will increase energy production at the station by more than 2% and reduce the load on thermal generation in the region.
