Lithium for Technological Independence: Murmansk Region to Begin Pilot Mining

Work is planned to start at the Polmostundrovskoye deposit as early as 2026

Pilot industrial lithium mining could begin in the Murmansk Region as early as 2026. This was announced by Alexander Kozlov, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia.

The work is planned to be carried out at the Polmostundrovskoye deposit on the Kola Peninsula. For now, it is not about full-scale industrial mining, but rather a geological exploration stage. According to Kozlov, the Russian lithium industry is currently at the preparatory stage of deposit development.

Lithium is considered one of the key metals for high-tech industries: it is used in batteries, electronics, and other modern productions. Therefore, the development of its own raw material base is important for reducing dependence on external supplies.

The first site where industrial lithium mining could begin in Russia, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources, is the Kolmozerskoye deposit – also located on the Kola Peninsula.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev stated that new lithium reserves have been discovered in Russia for the first time in 20 years. According to him, this is important for the country's resource independence and could attract private investment in geological exploration.

The topic of rare metals is also being discussed on the international agenda. On May 28, President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia and Kazakhstan are strengthening their partnership in the extraction of tungsten, molybdenum, lithium, and other strategic resources.
