China uses over 450 Russian helicopters of various types – from transport Mi-8/17 and modernized Mi-171 to heavy Mi-26, which indicates the deep integration of Russian rotorcraft into Chinese aviation logistics. This was reported by Defence Security Asia.
The core of the operation consists of Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters, which are used for transport tasks, search and rescue operations, medical evacuation, and providing support to remote areas. These machines are valued for their versatility and ability to operate in a wide range of climatic conditions.
More modern modifications of the Mi-171 and Mi-171E provide increased payload capacity and improved avionics, allowing them to be integrated into more complex logistical and tactical scenarios.
The Mi-26 occupies a special niche – the largest serial production transport helicopter in the world, used for transporting heavy equipment, engineering equipment, and performing tasks requiring unique payload capacity.
The operation of such a fleet required the creation of a comprehensive maintenance system, pilot training, and repair base in China. In fact, this refers to a closed-loop support cycle for Russian platforms, where a significant part of the infrastructure is adapted to the design solution standards of Russian helicopter manufacturing.
The publication summarizes that the Mi helicopter family has become part of China's logistical infrastructure, forming a stable dependence on Russian engineering schools and solidifying cooperation in the strategically important aviation niche.
