Metro without a map or cash: 2GIS payment launched in Nizhny Novgorod

The ticket is valid until the end of the day, and the turnstile reads the code from the phone

A new way to pay for travel has appeared in the Nizhny Novgorod metro. Now you can buy a ticket directly in the 2GIS application and pass through the turnstile using a QR code on your smartphone screen. The service is called "Geopay" Sber2B, and, as the company emphasizes, this is the first such launch for a metro in Russia.

The new technology started working on May 18, 2026. It was launched by Sber together with the regional transport operator "Citycard". A tripartite agreement on the development of digital payment services in Nizhny Novgorod transport was signed at the CIPR conference.

The essence of the service is as follows: the passenger does not need cash or a bank card at the turnstile. Payment can be made in the 2GIS application, after which the system will generate a QR code. It is valid until the end of the current day, so it can be used at any convenient time.

Sber explained that you can pay for the trip in several ways: build a route in the application, open the "Travel" menu, or go to your profile. Payment with any bank card is available in each of these sections.

After purchase, a QR code will appear on the screen. At the metro station, the smartphone with this code must be brought to the reader on the side panel of the turnstile. If everything went successfully, a green arrow will appear on the display, and a green signal will light up on the turnstile for the passenger to pass.

"Geopay" Sber2B operates in 14 cities of Russia for paying for travel in ground transport. But the launch in the Nizhny Novgorod metro was the first such experience.

Traditional cashless payment methods also work in Nizhny Novgorod: transport cards, virtual cards, bank cards, and the Nizhny Novgorod Region resident card.
