Research and development (R&D) for a new generation supersonic aircraft are expected in 2035–2040. These dates were announced by the head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov.
According to him, the design of technology demonstrators for the project has already begun as part of research work. The first tests will start in 2029–2030.
The results of the research will allow us to move to the R&D stage for a new generation supersonic civil aircraft in 2035–2040.
It is worth recalling that back in August 2025, Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov stated that there was no demand for a supersonic airliner due to its high cost.
Nevertheless, in early May 2026, GosNIIAS specialist Andrey Popov announced that the final design of the new supersonic passenger airliner had been formed. The airliner will have a straight, sharp nose, but no frontal glazing.
This is necessary for better aerodynamics at high speeds, explained aviation expert Andrey Velichko. How the crew will land the airliner in case of power failure on board was not explained by GosNIIAS.
