China scrambled Russian Su-30MKKs to escort H-6 bombers over the South China Sea

The aircraft carried R-77, YJ-91, and YJ-12 missiles

The Chinese military conducted a flight of H-6 bombers over the South China Sea under the cover of Su-30MKK fighters. The operation involved forces from the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). This was reported by Military Watch Magazine.

The publication states that the Su-30MKK fighters were armed with Russian R-77 active radar-guided air-to-air missiles, as well as Chinese YJ-91 anti-ship missiles. The H-6 bombers were equipped with YJ-12 missiles, designed to engage large surface targets.

The publication notes that after their delivery in 2004, the Su-30MKKs were considered the most advanced fighters in the Chinese armed forces. Later, the Chinese industry developed its own J-16 and J-15B combat aircraft based on the Su-27 platform.

According to MWM, in 2025, the Chinese Navy commissioned its first J-35 fifth-generation carrier-based fighter. It is expected that these aircraft will gradually replace the J-11B and Su-30MK2 in the future.
