Smolensk NPP completes overhaul of second power unit ahead of schedule

For the first time at the station, the graphite masonry of the core was restored

The second power unit of the Smolensk NPP has completed a scheduled major overhaul with modernization. Rosatom specialists and station engineers restored the resource of 156 technological channel cells. Specialists also replaced 25 control and protection system channels and, using robotic complexes, returned the reactor's graphite masonry to its design state.

The key task of the repair was to correct the geometry of the graphite masonry, which naturally changes during long-term operation.

First Deputy Chief Engineer Vadim Skirda explained that the structure is hidden inside a powerful metal frame, so access to it is limited. For precise fitting of parts, the team used special equipment and automated mechanisms capable of operating in confined spaces.

Smolensk NPP is the largest power plant in the region, located 3 km from Desnogorsk. The station produces about 80% of the region's electricity and 8% of the generation of the Central Federal District.

After successful commissioning tests, the updated power unit reached full capacity and is operating normally, providing stable energy supply to consumers.
