The Indian Air Force decided to modernize 84 Su-30MKI fighters after France refused to meet the requirements for technology transfer from Rafale. This was reported by Military Watch Magazine.
According to the source, after the breakdown of negotiations with France, India turned to Russia for the purchase of R-37M missiles, which were originally in service with the MiG-31.
The increased investment in Russian systems comes amid France's difficulties in promoting the Rafale fighter during negotiations with the Indian Ministry of Defence. This is partly due to an unwillingness to meet India's demands for technology transfer.
Military analysts warned that the Su-30MKI radars would not allow the full potential of the R-37M to be utilized. However, ground-based radar stations of the S-400 "Triumf" anti-aircraft missile systems, the delivery of which India is also awaiting, could assist in targeting.
Indian media estimated the value of the R-37M deal at $1.2 billion. Deliveries are expected to take up to 18 months.
